SEAS Colonial Cable

Greetings, SEAS Alumni,

Here's a look at recent and upcoming SEAS activities and events:

Nominations Sought for GW Engineering Hall of Fame

In November 2006, SEAS launched a new recognition program to honor the most distinguished individuals who have been associated with SEAS during their lives and careers. The GW Engineering Hall of Fame recognizes SEAS alumni as well as faculty, staff, and friends who during their careers have made sustained and meritorious contributions to engineering/technology and/or management. These individuals bring distinction to GW through their significant achievements and their contributions to their professions, the University, and society-at-large.

SEAS is eager to receive nominations of individuals to be considered for future induction. The deadline for consideration for induction at the November 2007 Hall of Fame banquet is March 16, 2007. Alumni who would like to nominate an individual for the GW Engineering Hall of Fame, should complete a nomination form and send it to:

SEAS Office of Advancement
The George Washington University
Tompkins Hall, Room 210
725 23rd Street NW
Washington, DC 20052

Fax: 202-994-2684
E-mail: seasalum@gwu.edu

SEAS Wins GW Funding for Academic Excellence Proposals

Two SEAS initiatives recently won funding from the University in the latest round of competition for GW's areas of academic excellence. Schools across the university submitted proposals to the Office of the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs for funding; eight were selected as new signature academic programs. The two SEAS programs that won funding are the GW Center for Biomimetics and Bioinspired Engineering (COBRE) and for the Institute for Massively Parallel Applications and Computing Technologies (IMPACT).

The goal of COBRE is to develop infrastructure for interdisciplinary research and education in the area of biomimetics and bioinspired engineering. Biomimetics is a field that attempts to create a paradigm to transfer or abstract Nature's technologies, design principles and solutions into our own designs to create small, multi-functional machines/technologies/devices.

Professor Rajat Mittal of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is the director of the Center, and several faculty from his department and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering currently are involved in the Center. Faculty from other SEAS departments and various science-related disciplines are expected to participate, as well. The Center will initially focus on developing research activity in bioinspired/biomimetic locomotion, control algorithms, materials and bio-metrology, and will also emphasize participation of undergraduates in research projects.

The second proposal-the high-performance computing proposal-brings together an interdisciplinary faculty team from six departments across SEAS and the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences to form a new institute called IMPACT, or the Institute for Massively Parallel Applications and Computing Technologies. The team is led by the Institute director, Professor Tarek El-Ghazawi of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Using the university investment, IMPACT will carry out research, educational, and outreach programs in high-performance computing (HPC). HPC refers to the application of supercomputers in various fields and to the exploration of new technologies to develop better supercomputers. Supercomputers, or high-performance computers, are machines that are hundreds or thousands of times faster than a typical desktop computer and may have thousands of processors in one system.

The IMPACT team intends to take advantage of two remarkable advantages that GW has in being able to advance state-of-the-art HPC technology: GW's large number of faculty who are world class scientists in HPC and the critical applications that can benefit from HPC, and GW's unique location in close proximity to major government research laboratories that are the principal users of high-performance computers.

Angel Investing Mini-Workshop

The George Washington University's School of Engineering and Applied Science
Council of Entrepreneurial Transfer and Commercialization (CET2C)
Angel Investors of Greater Washington (AIoGW.org)
Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development
Entrepreneur Center @ Northern Virginia Technology Council

Invite you to join us for a complimentary mini-workshop on angel investing

Angel investors are the primary funders of new technology-based startups, annually investing around $30 billion in 50,000 deals across the country. In an effort to help startup creation and funding in the Greater Washington area, we invite you to join us for a free mini-workshop on angel investing. This is a great networking opportunity to meet other area leaders interested in making the Greater Washington region a premier technology cluster, by commercializing the area's break-through university and federal lab technologies through new startup creation and funding.

Angel investing isn't just about providing capital. It is also about people who want to do well by doing good. Angel investing is ideal for successful entrepreneurs who have exited their business and have an interest in staying involved in early-stage companies, or high net-worth individuals with senior business experience, who now have the time and interest in helping the next generation of area entrepreneurs. Angel investing involves mentoring and providing strategic advice, along with helping to recruit senior management and provide access to institutional investors and strategic partners.

The workshop will be led by active angel investors, serial entrepreneurs, regional venture capitalists, and private equity experts. The mini-workshop will cover:

  • How to structure the investment deal
  • Due diligence
  • Managing dilution
  • Knowing your exit strategy

Venture Capital/Angels Workshop II:

Time: 3:00-6:00
Place: 1957 E Street, NW
The City View Room, 7th Floor

Time: 6:30-9:00
Place: 1957 E Street, NW
The City View Room, 7th Floor
The George Washington University

EAA and SEAS Host 2nd Annual Resume Critique Event

As part of the Engineer Alumni Association's (EAA) goal to provide professional development programs for SEAS alumni and current students, it joined with the SEAS Career Services Office to host the second annual resume critique event on January 23, 2007.

Targeted at both alumni and current students, the resume critique event provided an opportunity for both groups to get feedback from professionals on their resumes. The event also included two sessions on resume writing and interviewing.

Ten area organizations (governmental, private, and non-profit) participated, including Data and Analytic Solutions, Dewberry, HNTB, FDA, Mitre Corporation, NSF, NSA, SAIC, Sprint/Nextel, and Unisys. Two of the participating resume reviewers are GW alumni. In addition, more than 70 SEAS alumni and current students attended the event.

SEAS and the EAA received great feedback from the participants, and the EAA plans to offer another resume critique event next fall. EAA members see this event as a great opportunity for alumni to get involved with SEAS and give something back to their alma mater, and they hope that even more companies will be represented at the next event.
